Why You Should Care About Your Skin's Immune System
The skin is a hugely important – and extremely busy – organ that works tirelessly to protect us against infection and injury, regulate our body temperature, defend against UVA rays, and fight against the harmful effects of pollution. Consistently acting as a protective barrier between our internal organs and the environment, it is akin to a heart or a lung in the upkeep of optimal health.
“To keep skin functioning at its healthiest level, we must look below the surface to its immune system.”
The products we use topically play a huge role in general skin health, which is why we’re so dedicated to high-quality natural ingredients. But to keep skin functioning at its healthiest level, we must look below the surface to its immune system.
The skin has two layers: the epidermis, or the surface layer, and the dermis, just below. Langerhans and T-Cells are the primary immune cells found in the epidermis. Langerhans cells are like a first-response system for the immune system, constantly patrolling the surface of the skin and monitoring for danger (read: inflammation). When skin becomes inflamed – which can come in the form of sunburn, acne, wrinkles, bug bites, and minor cuts or scrapes – Langerhans dispatch T-Cells to the wound site to begin repairing the skin. You could say that the T-Cells hold grudges: they have a memory for antigens, the invaders that cause an immune response within the body, and are constantly on the prowl for them.
Below the epidermis is a layer of skin called the dermis, which is composed of nerves, glands, blood vessels, and collagen fibers; all of which are critical to the health of the skin. The dermis is highly bioactive and contains a wide variety of immune cells, including macrophages: white blood cells that travel through the lymphatic system targeting invasive pathogens and bacteria and swallowing them up, then carrying them through the lymph system to the lymph nodes to be flushed out of the body.
"By maintaining a consistent dry brushing practice followed by a full body massage with an immune-boosting remedy, we can optimize the health of the skin's immune system."
By maintaining a consistent dry brushing practice followed by a full body massage with an immune-boosting remedy, we can optimize the health of the skin’s immune system at both the epidermis and dermis levels. These practices stimulate circulation and lymphatic flow, promote the health of sebaceous glands and encourage the turnover of surface skin cells for healthy, glowing skin.
