Olfactory Nostalgia with Carla Harshman
NEROLI
At In Fiore, we believe the skin is a sense organ and scent initiates healing. Olfactory Nostalgia is a look at medicinal triggers, scented memories, and the feelings that ensue when taking in a distinct ingredient.
Meet Carla Harshman, the New York-based self-care coach and founder of RITUELS DU JOUR, a private coaching practice specializing in elevated self-care for emotional and mental wellness. Carla is honest about her story and has found healthy ways to cope and soothe. She has studied the many ways to understand the mind, body, and soul connection at a deeper level to help those who seek daily rituals, distress tolerance skills, and emotional regulation.
“I feel more polished and put together when I’m wearing perfume than when I’m wearing makeup, or have had a blowout. ”

Olfactory Nostalgia:
Summertime. Carefree, and on holiday—neroli reminds me of past summers spent on the Mediterranean. Lost in sunshine. I can hear the water rushing over the rocks if I close my eyes, I melt just thinking about it. Sandy toes, sun-soaked, freckled, and salty skin. The best. I think of climbing the stairs from the sea, and smelling the sweet aroma of the fig trees in late August.
I returned from the South of France last week, so everything is fresh in my mind, but my love affair with neroli dates back much further than just summer holidays. It also reminds me of my father’s mother, Stella, my grandmother. She wore fuschia lipstick no matter what, and I loved that about her. She gave the best (tightest) hugs. Neroli not only takes me to summer’s past, but it transports me back to the warmth and love I felt through her hugs.
Perfumery as Medicine:
Scent has the power to transform our current emotional state and can alter our mood. Energize, excite, arouse, ignite nostalgia, melancholy––even sadness. It’s powerful, and I believe it has the ability to carry us through to times past. Perfumery as medicine also signifies ritual to me. Selecting and choosing to wear a signature scent is deeply personal and an incredibly intimate experience because it becomes part of you over time. You begin to be recognized for your scent, and your smell is missed by some––family, friends, lovers. The application of scent feels luxurious, too. It’s the quiet moment right before I head out into the city and start my day; it becomes a part of your routine, a ritual, and in a unique way, perfumery as medicine provides grounding and stability in a world that is changing by the hour. I feel more polished and put together when I’m wearing perfume than when I’m wearing makeup, or have had a blowout. Scent is powerful because it’s more memorable and often unforgettable. I choose to be unforgettable.
