Calendula is a profound healer, a remedy for the heart, and a channel into a deeper understanding of oneself. Light is the potential of everything
Native to southwestern Asia, Western Europe and the Mediterranean, calendula, also known as marigold, was originally called Mary’s Gold, named after the Virgin Mary. The “gold” of marigold is due to the flower’s brilliant orange-yellow color, and it’s to this golden hue that calendula owes its association to light. In the study of anthroposophy, a leading influence for In Fiore Creatrix Julie Elliott, gold is to other metals what the sun is to the other planets: the point of origin of light, life, and order. We consider calendula to be representative of sun forces on the earth—a form of nourishment, a catalyzer, and a nutritive that is absorbed by the body and plays a vital role in all metabolic functions. It is thought to support the quality and direction of thinking, strengthen the creative soul-forces and help preserve their freedom, and, give one a firm hold on the earth while preventing excessively strong bondage to it.
Calendula’s benefits are abundant in the skincare realms, as well. It’s a significant nutritional supplement for the skin, enriched with beta-carotene, which in high doses has been shown to help with photoprotective activity and defend against free radicals that attack collagen and elastin (making it an excellent pre-SPF layer). It is a potent source of the antioxidant xanthophyll, which promotes skin hydration, lipid content, and elasticity. An anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and healing agent, it’s also an exceptional remedy for everything from acne to sunburns to cuts and rashes. In essence, it’s as good as gold.
