Setting the Record Straight on Layering
Oils as part of a beauty regimen is a relatively new concept for many people, and we receive lots of questions about when and how to apply them. Many companies recommend oil as the final step of a skincare routine, but as a brand whose DNA centers around oil’s extensive healing powers, we take a different approach. We decided to shed some light on why oil is the first step of any In Fiore routine.
Our oils are not meant to be an occlusive outermost layer. Our raw floral materials are sourced from around the world—selectively chosen from regions where knowledge of cultivation runs as deep as the history of their people. Our proprietary oil blends are 100% active which means when you apply them first, your skin reaps the most of their nourishing benefits. Trust us—that’s some goodness you don’t want to waste.
Whereas many oils can feel like they sit on the surface of the skin (sometimes all day)—or, worse, pill with the addition of other products—In Fiore blends have a small molecular size and are carefully formulated to absorb quickly and penetrate deeply. Moreover, massage, an integral component of our 4-2-4 Cleansing Method, increases blood flow in the face, prepping the skin and improving its ability to absorb oil.
But not for water. In fact, our skin really doesn’t absorb water all that well, but oils help water-based products bind to the skin. When we were working with Albion, our Japanese partners, to develop our botanical waters, it wasn’t until we began exploring the concept of our “Micro Rich Oil Capsule” technology (essentially infusing the waters with tiny microscopic oil capsules), that the formulations began to penetrate much more quickly and effectively. (They are now some of our best-sellers.)
We might even go so far as to call it clingy, just not to its face. When you apply oil as your first skin care layer, it helps the following layers bind to the skin. So if you’re worried about wasting precious drops of your expensive serums—rest assured that they’re designed to work synergistically with your oils for maximum efficacy. (And speaking of clingy, when applied first, our oils lock in the skin’s natural moisture and replenish the lipid barrier, helping to prevent trans-epidermal water loss.) For best results, apply your oil, then a spritz of Vitale, Transparence or Regenerant, and your skin will be prepped and ready for anything else you throw at it.
