On Beauty: Lucy Goff
Welcome to ON BEAUTY, a monthly feature highlighting creative, like-minded people who inspire us.
Nine years ago, a diagnosis of Septicemia, a bloodstream infection, changed LYMA founder Lucy Goff’s life forever. After the former fashion journalist had her daughter, she suffered from Mastitis, which turned into Cellulitis, and transitioned to Septicemia. Lucy was in the hospital for weeks and once she returned home, her energy and functionality were at an all-time low.
After visiting an array of doctors, who felt as if they couldn’t help her energy levels, she met leading longevity physician Dr. Paul Clayton while visiting a Geneva recuperation clinic. Dr. Clayton introduced Lucy to a category of supplementation that was medical grade and after taking them for about four weeks, she finally felt like herself again. Thus, the idea for LYMA was born with a mission to invent and lead the category of wellness technology.
A few years later, LYMA revealed and re-engineered a hospital-grade laser into a small portable device to help combat premature aging. The two-defining products work together to heal inflammation from the inside, out and Lucy has our founder Julie Elliott enamored by her creations. So much so, Julie has seen her skin transform twofold when used in tandem with In Fiore products.
The feeling is mutual. Lucy is a huge fan of In Fiore and the two met after she experienced In Fiore products at her weekly Ricari Studios treatment with Anna Zahn. Lucy’s love for In Fiore was instantaneous and after Anna introduced them, the two founders forged a fast friendship.
Here, Lucy shares what makes her supplements differ from others and why they are so efficacious, the science behind her exceptional at-home laser, and her must-have in-flight beauty essential.
Your supplements are touted as “medical grade.” How does yours differ from other supplements on the market?
Over 90% of the supplement market doesn’t work. It’s a complete placebo because there’s no legislation in place that says they have to work. Our supplements took a long time to come to market because this category of supplementation was not readily available to consumers. The price points are a lot more expensive, so we really had to change consumer perception of how much you should be paying for a supplement.
The LYMA supplement has gone through the same rigorous development and testing as a pharmaceutical drug. It’s been tested for toxicity, bioavailability, stability, and efficacy. And the results have been proven to be robust enough that they’ve been published in peer-reviewed medical journals.
Also, we dose them correctly because you’ll find lots of other companies dose them in minuscule levels just to say that they’ve used this amazing ingredient on the pack. So for us, you don’t have to hope it’s going to work. It’s going to improve your sleep, reduce stress, make you think sharper, and make your hair stronger.
Your LYMA Laser came next, so why was it important to have both a topical application and ingestible?
We were adamant that our next product should also be category-defining. Dr. Clayton was working in Germany and he was looking at a 62-year-old man's knees that had been treated with low-level laser therapy to rebuild cartilage. The skin on the knee that had been treated looked about 20 years younger than the other. And that's when he had a light bulb moment and thought, this is the next LYMA product.
In the cosmetic industry, the at home-devices are all LED because it's a safe technology you can use at home. It's not because it's the most effective. Nobody had really engineered a device or an at-home laser that was powerful enough to transform skin. So that was our next challenge, to re-engineer a hospital-grade laser into a little portable device.
So now we have the LYMA Supplement, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory and you've got the laser, that's also a powerful anti-inflammatory. You're giving your body a double shot, treating inflammation, which is the cause of most premature aging and the onset of most diseases from the inside and outside. It works as a complete system.
You shared that the LYMA Laser is much stronger than LED light. What makes it more robust?
To rebuild the skin, you must target the cells at the base layer, which is where regeneration takes place. The problem with LED is that it's superficial. It can't penetrate through the skin without losing power. However, with the LYMA Laser, you've got 25,000 laser beams that penetrate all the way to the base layer of the skin without damaging a single cell in the process. It triggers a genetic switch inside each of your cells. The cells associated with aging are switched off and the cells associated with renewal are switched on. That's why you need to use it every day for the first 12 weeks.
Your skin cells start to die off naturally when you are in your early twenties and therefore, you're producing less and less collagen, which means wrinkles begin to form. So the LYMA Laser is a way of boosting and overstimulating collagen levels, so your skin starts working again like it did when you were younger. You start to see an increased firmness and a decrease in wrinkles. Your skin is less inflamed. So rosacea goes and your scars are completely remodeled. It completely transforms your skin, making the LYMA Laser 100 times more powerful than near-infrared LED.
When using the LYMA Laser, can you also receive laser treatments in a clinic? How does that work?
It’s completely up to you. You can use it as a standalone product and you don’t need anything else if you are using the laser every day. But the beauty of the laser is you can use it and have in-clinic treatments and you don’t have to wait a week after having a session to then use the laser. In fact, it’s the ideal accompaniment to treatments like microneedling, ablative lasers, or anything where you are going to leave the clinic with a swollen, bruised, or red complexion.
If you use the laser that evening, it will take away the redness and increase the results. If you have Botox and you end up getting a bruise, you can get rid of that bruise by the following day. It’s increasing the potential of what your skin can look like outside of the clinic.
The laser is sold alongside your LYMA Active Mist and Priming Serum. Should these be used in tandem or are you able to use other products?
The products that come with the laser are not conductors, so it’s not required. But it will enhance the results of the laser. Each morning and evening after cleansing, incorporate them into your regular beauty routine. After cleansing, apply the mist, then apply the serum, and then follow with the rest of your beauty regime. Then when you are ready, you can use the laser.
The products have a couple of actives that enhance the results of the laser light. They include highly bioavailable, active, stabilized oxygen, so it’s got the highest content of oxygen scientifically possible in water. This increases circulation in your skin. You’ve got low molecular weight, which is especially useful if you suffer from rosacea or any redness in your skin. And then there’s also stem cell technology, which helps the fibroblasts communicate better. When you add the supplement in as well, you’re tackling inflammation from the inside. That’s when you get the optimal result.
What’s next for LYMA?
We will always only ever have one supplement, but that supplement will be upgraded on an annual basis to make sure that we always keep abreast of the latest scientific developments. We’ve got a really exciting laser roadmap that’s planned, which can be used all over the body. It’s been used in hospitals since the 1960s, so we know it’s completely safe and effective.
We’re also entering a new category early next year, which will disrupt another sector. And the results of that are mind-blowing.
Favorite scent?
My favorite scent is a really old one. It’s L'Artisan Parfumeur L'Eau D'Ambre and it’s quite a heavy, musky scent. But it stays on you when you put it on in the morning and you can still smell it in the evening. It reminds me of living in France and it takes me away from having a bad day. I feel as if I’m by the sea in the Mediterranean instead of in a city.
Do you have any tips for long-haul flights?
My biggest tip is to use the laser. The laser’s great to travel with, but always make sure you put it in your hand luggage. If you use it all the way through the flight, you’ll come off the plane looking like you did before you got on, instead of looking like a prune. The air during travel sucks every last bit of goodness out of your body.
Favorite beauty food?
There’s a solubilized keratin that we have in our LYMA supplement that plumps your skin and it makes it really dewy. Lots of the keratin industry is actually made from chicken waste and that doesn’t have the same amino acid profile as humans. So this solubilized keratin is derived from sheep’s wool and it’s medically proven to get into your hair, skin, and nails.
The other ingredient is fresh apricots. There’s a tribe in Northern Pakistan called the Hunter Tribe that holds the longest livers. Their mainstay diet staple are apricots. As soon as I found that out a few years ago, I always make sure that I eat a packet of apricots every day.
Do you have any vices?
Trashy TV like Married at first sight. I just love it. Anything that takes your mind off reality at the end of the day. I just finished watching White Lotus. That was brilliant.
Do you have any charms or talismans?
When I was younger, I did ballet quite seriously. My grandmother gave me a little piece of net from Margo Fonteyn's tutu. I don’t know whether she was telling the truth because she never knew Margo Fonteyn, but she always told me it was from Margo Fonteyn’s Tutu. I carry it with me in my bags wherever I go.
What are your go-to products from In Fiore and how do you use them with the LYMA Laser?
I have two favorites: the Fleur Vibrante Solution and Calendula Solution. For my LYMA Laser X In Fiore protocol, I follow the first two LYMA protocol steps, which are to apply six pumps of the LYMA Active Mist, followed by 2 to 4 pumps of the Priming Serum. I then use the Fleur Vibrante serum and either of my favorite In Fiore facial oils (depending on my mood. Then I glide the Laser slowly around my face, also holding on specific problem areas for three minutes. When I’m using the LYMA Laser on my body, I also love the In Fiore Firmante Leg Tonic. The In Fiore oils give the perfect glide for the device, don’t dry out quickly, and hydrate your skin throughout the day.
