Olfactory Nostalgia with Stephanie Stone
PLUMERIA
At In Fiore, we believe the skin is a sense organ and scent initiates healing. Olfactory Nostalgia is a look at medicinal triggers, scented memories, and the feelings that ensue when taking in a distinct ingredient.
Meet Stephanie Stone, the Los Angeles-based celebrity and editorial manicurist. The beauty savant is a true artist and has a knack for creating fun nail art that makes you feel nostalgic. Think ying yangs, ombre, and daisies, among an array of other designs. But at the end of the day, Stephanie can do just about anything when it comes to your talons.
“Scents have the ability to mentally take you back and help you revisit the feelings you had during the time when you first discovered them.”

Olfactory Nostalgia:
Growing up in Hawaii, there were lots of plumeria trees around our neighborhood. Often as a kid, there were so many flowers blooming you could pick enough off the ground to craft a lei. We would collect all the flowers on the ground in a grocery bag and take them home to be strung onto a piece of thread. You then gift the lei to someone you love, a visitor, or even your teacher to show appreciation and respect. The scent and even sight of the plumeria will always remind me of where I grew up and all the memories that come with it. When I smell a plumeria, it's so much more than a flower; it's riding my bike to the beach and smelling the ocean air, it's realizing there's still sand in my hair hours after I got home, and it's showing your love for someone by greeting them with a handcrafted lei.
Scents are also such a beautiful reminder of all that nature gives us. In Hawaii, it is critical to respect the land. You don't pick the flowers off the trees, especially as a visitor. If you are ever gifted a flower lei, don't throw the flowers in the garbage when they start to wilt. Hang it back on a tree or lay the flowers in the grass so they can be returned to the earth.
Perfumery as Medicine:
To me, scents are very special in that I don't want to wear my nostalgic ones all the time because I never want to get used to or tired of them. Scents have the ability to mentally take you back and help you revisit the feelings you had during the time when you first discovered them. I think that power can potentially be very healing. A subtle scent can also leave you craving more. Even just writing about the plumeria, I've never wanted to visit home more.
