Known more widely as the “Holy Fruit of the Himalayas,” sea buckthorn is one of those ingredients we could all learn a lot from: strength, tenacity, endurance. Grown primarily high in the Himalayan Mountains, it endures the intense conditions of high altitude, exposure to powerful ultraviolet radiation, extreme heat and cold, and dry soil. Its root system can penetrate deep into rocky soil, allowing it to thrive in the toughest terrains. The plant is a survivor, with built-in defense mechanisms and water-saving tricks that help it to flourish without needing much nourishment from the land. The only thing sea buckthorn requires is plenty of sunlight. All things considered, it rightfully earns its status as a super food.
From a skincare standpoint, sea buckthorn has one of the richest nutritional profiles of all fruits. The oil extracted from the pulp contains nearly 200 properties and a balanced mix of omegas; that, coupled with the fact that it is easily absorbed by the epidermis, means it’s an effective solution for dry, flaky, or aging skin. Its ultra-high carotenoid content gives it an orange-red color, and its unique relationship with light, air, and warmth make it particularly suitable for both preventing UV damage and repairing that which already exists. Sea buckthorn is often used in the treatment of allergy-prone skin because its high levels of vitamin E, linoleic and linolenic acid, and palmitoleic acid soothe skin irritations and eliminate inflammation. It also promotes epithelialization and enhances granulation—in other words, helps heal and re-densify the skin, while supporting the healthy interplay of energies within the skin.
